Carpenter’s Custom Gunstocks Offers
Serving the shotgun enthusiast through stock alteration or fabrication to achieve a proper gun fit.
Gun fitting
A gun that fits the shooter is essential in shotgun sports. A properly fitting gun can provide both accuracy for a target but also comfort and less fatigue while shooting.
There are several options to having work done to get your gun to fit you. The measures taken are a matter of customer preference, ranging from modest changes such as installing a new recoil pad to designing and building a custom-fitted stock.
Custom fabricated stocks
I can fabricate a custom-fit buttstock and forend for your shotgun. We start by discussing your fit issues and needs. I can then build a pattern stock that we can use to work on your fit. Once the pattern is ready I mount it to your gun and then adjust the fit with you in my shop. Adjustments include the length of pull, pitch, toe, cast, offset, and hand position.
At this point, it is time to shoot. You take the gun with you and shoot it for a while to acclimate to your new fit. At any time we may decide to make minor adjustments as needed. Once your pattern fits and shoots well it is ready to duplicate onto your selected hardwood.
After duplication and fitting to your gun, we will again fine-tune the stock, put a temporary finish on it and have you shoot it to ensure everything is good before putting on the final finish.
With the final finish complete we can begin to design a checkering pattern to your liking.
With a little input on your preferences, I will design and carve a one-of-a-kind pattern for your custom stock.
Adjustable combs
Adjustable combs may be added to some guns to help modify the line of sight. An adjustable comb can help align your eye to the rib by allowing you to move your comb up, down, left, or right.
Pad adjusters
A pad adjuster can be installed in conjunction with a new recoil pad to allow for raising or lowering the pad. Additionally, it can adjust to give the stock toe in or toe out. If the stock needs to be cut, Pitch can be addressed during installation. A pad adjuster does not help align your eye to the rib, it mainly helps with gun placement in the shoulder pocket. It is often needed for taller shooters that require a drop at the pad to prevent rolling your head down and forward to place your head on the stock.
Recoil pads
Should your recoil pad need replacement I can install a new “grind to fit” recoil pad with or without threaded inserts to prevent the screws from stripping out the wood. In some cases, a stock wrench hole through the pad can be done as well.
Checkering
Whether your gun never had checkering or it is simply worn and needs refreshing I offer new checkering and recutting services.
Stock refinishing
A full-stock refinish includes:
– Stripping the old finish off of the stock and forend.
– Making minor repairs and removing dents or filling them as needed.
– Applying a new hand-rubbed oil or lay-on finish.
– Checking the wood-to-metal fit and bedding as needed.
-Recutting the existing checkering.
Consider adding a new recoil pad along with a full refinish to prepare your shotgun for its new life.
Repairs
I can also do repairs. Due to the wide array of damage that can result from use repairs can range from fixing a simple dent to a broken stock to forend.
